WHAT IS SKIN BOOSTER?

Korean ladies have always been known for having dewy, glass-like, or porcelain skin. In Singapore, skin booster treatment (水 光 针) (also known as collagen injections) is the secret to obtaining that beautiful, porcelain skin.

The main ingredient for most brands of skinboosters is hyaluronic acid, a compound found naturally in parts of your body, such as the eyes, joints and especially in the skin. Its primary function is to keep body parts lubricated and well hydrated and increase subdermal collagen production.

What is the procedure for Skin Boosters like?
 
 

Skin boosters can be injected either manually or using an injector device. However, the injector device may not be suitable for some brands of skin boosters due to the viscosity, which may cause blockage in the device. In addition, there is a risk of leakage when using injector devices, too, leading to wastage of the product.

Dr Lim has a preference for the manual injection method. However, the manual injection method is known to be slightly more uncomfortable than using the injector device (greatly helped by the numbing cream) but brings several upsides with it. It allows for better control and placement of the skinboosters to bring out an effect that best matches the patient’s expectations. The manual injection process can also reduce the number of injection points needed with good planning, leading to lower downtime and cost of the procedure for the patient. This method also leads to a reduction in wasted products.

 
 
HOW DOES SKIN BOOSTER TREATMENT WORK?

Skin boosters containing hyaluronic acid are injected using an injector device or manual injections. These small deposits of hyaluronic acid skin boosters act like water reservoirs under the skin.

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance produced by the human body. It is mainly found in your skin, eyes and connective tissue. More than 50% of the hyaluronic acid in your body is found in your skin! The primary function of hyaluronic acid is to upkeep tissue hydration and lubrication. This will attract further water, resulting in better skin hydration, improvement in skin elasticity and reduction of fine lines. As we grow older, our skin loses water (hydration), hyaluronic acid, collagen and fat.

Skin boosters will help stimulate collagen production, which improves overall skin quality and hydration and has been shown to reduce other skin problems like acne scars. The overall results of skin boosters can combat the effects of ageing with increased skin hydration, radiance, elasticity, and texture.

How long is the Skin Booster treatment?
 

The entire skinbooster injections treatment will take approximately 10 – 20 minutes depending on the treated area.

 
Is the Skin Booster treatment painful?
 

The process uses micro-injections. These are shallow and performed with a very fine needle. Topical numbing cream will be applied on the skin prior to the treatment to minimize discomfort.

 
How many times will Skin Booster treatment be required?
 

A traditional course of skinbooster treatment necessitates 3 consecutive monthly treatments followed by a maintenance skin booster treatment every 6 months. With newer skin booster treatments, results can last up to 9 months with just a single treatment.

 
Is there any downtime?
 


Based on doctor's experience, using the injector device, downtime experienced is usually about 3 days since there are more injection sites from the device. The force of the injection is also higher when using the device and the risk of injection related side effects such as bruising is increased.

With care and experience, a doctor using the manual injection method can reduce the number of injection points needed while attaining a similar effect with good planning. Skill in handling the injections will minimize the risk of injection related side effects and the manual method expects only a maximum downtime of 2 days.

Occasionally, bruising in the top layers of skin may occur, and the symptoms can be alleviated with an anti-bruising pill medication to help blood vessels in the skin heal.

 
Am I a good candidate for Skin boosters?
 

Skinbooster treatment is suitable for everyone, regardless of skin type, or if the patient is young or mature. They can improve overall skin quality, deep skin hydration, improved skin elasticity, reducing fine lines and improving the smoothness of the skin texture — thus achieving the appearance of youthful skin.

If cost is a concern, how doctor would usually advise the patients is to understand which targeted areas are the most required. As an arbitrary average, 2 mls of the skinbooster used will be enough to cover an Asian face. If you are considering skin boosters for the neck and surrounding areas, another 3 mls will be required. This however as stated before, is an arbitrary number that will vary from person to person — your doctor will be able to give you the best gauge and advice on the amounts required.
