Scar Subcision

What is needle subcision?

Acne scar subcision is a minor surgical procedure that is used to treat certain depressed acne scars.

  • How does it work?

Using a needle to insert beneath the scar, it will detach the fibrous bands, and release the scar from tethering downwards. The process also helps to stimulate collagen in the area of the scar.

  • How long is the treatment?

The entire treatment will take approximately 10~20 minutes depending on the treated area.

  • Is the treatment painful?

Based on individual’s pain tolerance, location and depth of the scar, most people are able to tolerate the treatment with minimal discomfort. Topical anesthetic will be used prior to treatment to make the procedure more tolerable.

  • How many treatments are required?

Depending on patient’s acne scars condition, combination treatments such as fractional laser resurfacing and TCA Cross may be required to achieve optimal results.

  • Is there any downtime?

The treated area may experience some swelling, bruising, soreness and redness after the procedure and it will go away in 5-7 days. Patients may resume normal activities after their treatment. It is advisable to minimize prolonged sun exposure and keep the treated area clean to avoid infection.

  • Who is not suitable for subcision?

    • Patient who has history of keloid and hypertrophic scars
    • Existing skin infection
    • Oral retinoids for the last 12 months
    • Blood thinners medications
